FIG. 01
The Honing Standard

The weight of one ten-thousandth.

Honing is the finishing operation that decides whether a bore seals, holds pressure, and runs for a million cycles — or fails on a test bench. Chicago Precision Honing covers the full honing spectrum across Illinois, Wisconsin & Indiana: rough-to-finish, plateau, single-pass, multi-stroke, deep-hole, and long-stroke tube work, performed to bearing-spec surface finish and tight diametral tolerance.

Every part is honed against the print. Bore tolerance is held to ± 0.0002", surface finish is targeted to the application — engine, hydraulic, pump, or aerospace — and process records are retained against the work order. No part leaves without dimensional verification.

Quotes are returned in 24 hours. Submit the part, the tolerance band, and the quantity — pricing comes back as a fixed itemized number, not a range.

"Honing is the difference between a bore that holds a piston and a bore that holds a story."

Bore Geometries Supported

Honing approach is selected to the geometry of the work — through-bore, blind, double-blind, dual-diameter, large-diameter, and external surfaces are each held by purpose-built tooling and machine families. The grid below covers the geometry envelope this site is engineered to quote.

Internal honing services

ID bore finishing covering bore honing, single-pass, multi-stroke, expansion, plateau, rigid, flexible (Flex-Hone), cross-hatch finish, dual-diameter step, blind bore, and tube ID work

External honing services

OD finishing — OD through-feed, flat, spherical, track/raceway, and super-finish external surfaces on tapered and straight geometries

Precision bore honing services

Tight-tolerance bore finishing with single-pass, multi-stroke, hybrid, multi/single-spindle, 3-axis flexible, rough, two-step plateau, and tapered honing machines

Blind bore honing services

Swivel-stone tooling, tubular mandrels with conical inner surfaces, expandable mandrels with adjustable cones, and flexible honing tools that adapt to blind holes

Double-blind end bore honing services

Swivel-stone freecut tooling and tubular mandrels engineered for parts closed on both ends

Through bore honing services

Single-stone, multi-stone, shell (for keyways / rifled tubes), and expandable tooling; horizontal vs vertical machine selection

Dual diameter bore honing services

Stepped / two-diameter bores using coaxial honing tools, tandem tools, and hybrid single-pass plus multi-stroke machines

Large diameter honing services

Vertical-spindle and horizontal machines, multi-spindle systems, K-type and disc-type heads engineered for oversized bores
